How Web 3.0 will help YOU find your Voice
You’re in the jungle, baby.
For the last twenty years, you have been living in Web 2.0: Amazon, Wikipedia, blogs, TikTok, and the Internet as you now see it, flaming across multiple devices. It is a JUNGLE of colourful videos and big predators. Viral stars rise and fall, trends bloom and vanish all over the globe. What’s it been like? And what has it meant for YOU as you seek to find your voice?
The Jungle has led to big predators. As you speak and tell your story in the Jungle, big lions devour your data. You want to talk to someone? Go through Facebook (Meta), who manage your data. Want to buy something from someone on the other side of the world? Go through Amazon, who handle the transaction. Want to hear someone speak? Go through TikTok, who record your behaviour.
These lions and tigers sink their jaws into your story. The way you buy, the way you talk, and the way you desire is fed to other organisations for marketing purposes. This monetisation of data is a characteristic trait of Web 2.0. And you will find, as you set foot in the jungle, that the predators are out for YOU. Reels and advertisements roar on your screen, targeted for YOU. There is a drive and a demand to sell YOU new goods. Various groups persuade YOU of new ideas, new policies.

The Jungle is astonishing. And for many young people, it is appealing and addictive. An individual moment becomes viral in a matter of seconds. You say something, and before you know it, you are splashed across Times Square, recorded forever. A billion musicians and politicians find their voice on YouTube and Soundcloud. You can rise to the top of the Jungle in minutes. Yet this presents its dangers for young people. You are finding your voice in a land of lions that are out for your data.
The story you tell on Facebook or Google is liable to threat. Your profile can be hacked, and your friends are soaked with messages you never sent. Videos and statements may be made in your name, and yet, you never made them! A scary feeling. A misplaced password, and your identity is stolen. And as you desire to share your most private and personal secrets with others, you hesitate, realising they can be shared with others forever. Do you feel at home in the Jungle? Or would you rather navigate the universe in a more steady fashion?
