The increasing role of AI and its impact on young people
AI - you’ve heard the word - maybe you’re thinking of some evil superintelligence like Ultron from the Avengers.
The reality is, AI exists NOW in many forms - from chess engines, to Google Translate, to the system that Spotify uses to recommend you new music.
AI is “artificial intelligence” and simply means anything done by computers we once thought could only be done by humans.
And translating and sorting music were once those things!
As time goes on, we are getting less and less impressed that AI can accomplish these sort of tasks.
The reality is it is creeping in all around us.
And you’ve grown up with it.
You’re “AI natives” because iPads, iPhones, and the Internet have simply been a part of your life from the get go.
So, the risk here is that we forget this is a new time in human history and we don’t think about the way AI, which comes through a lot of your devices, Facebook, and apps- is affecting the way we feel and live.
The good thing is that AI has become a powerful tool in education.
AI detects plagiarism, and may tell teachers a lot about a student, like their academic scores and learning style. This information allows them to change the way they teach to benefit individual students. After all, most young people have grown up with a learning management system at school, a world of school that takes place online!
The dark side to this is that people use AI, like an online robot that writes essays, to cheat at school or even university. The unis and schools will adapt to these changes.
Then, there is the matter of PEOPLE.
AI recommends us Facebook friends to add and posts to like from people we might know. It is seeping into our digital world and gradually leading us towards connections and content we may or may not like. And yet, we’re hooked. AI gives us ads and job recommendations. Who knows the scale of the effect? There are shouts it is so influential AI can change the effect of an election. All of this is to say, be on your guard! It is not just Facebook and Insta you are living through.
There are actually artificial brains out there trying to influence what you do.

For sure, there’s a lot more to think about and talk about, so let’s share and create a Voix Guide together, and find out what’s important for YOU.
