Gen Z is leading the way in mental health awareness
Let’s talk again about #GenZ The Mental Health “Pioneers”
Did you know that Generation Z, born between 1997 and 2012, is more open about their mental health than any previous generation? They're not just breaking the stigma. They're smashing it! The older generations have much to learn and admire about the “younger ones”!
So, Why Gen Z Are Leading the Way?
These digital natives have grown up in a world where talking about mental health is normal and natural. In fact, 37% of Gen Z have received treatment or therapy, compared to just 26% of Gen X'ers and 22% of Baby Boomers.
"Gen Z is the first generation to be completely raised with the internet and smartphones, and this has had a significant impact on their openness about mental health." - Arlin Cuncic, MA.
The Role of Technology and Social Media
Unlike previous generations, Gen Z sees the internet as a tool for connection and support. They're using platforms like Instagram and TikTok to share their experiences and spread awareness about mental health.

Importantly, Gen Z is also utilising technology to get help. In fact, 91% of Gen Z reported experiencing physical or psychological symptoms due to stress, and many are turning to online therapy and mental health apps for support.
Examples of Gen Z Leading the Change
1. Selena Gomez has been open about her struggles with anxiety and depression, helping to normalise the conversation around mental health.
2. Lili Reinhart: The Riverdale actress regularly uses her platform to discuss mental health and the importance of seeking help.
What Embracing Openness Can Do For You
By taking a leaf out of Gen Z's book, we can all become more comfortable discussing mental health. This openness not only helps to break the stigma but also ensures that those who are struggling feel less alone and more able to seek help.
Remember, talking about mental health isn't a sign of weakness; it's a sign of strength and courage.
